Bannerman Island Castle - Beacon, NY   2006-09-18

If you ever ride a Hudson line MetroNorth train, just north of West Point, and south of the town of Beacon, along the Hudson you'll see a mysterious abandoned structure on an island in the middle of the river.    In the early 20th century, Frank Bannerman, a dealer in surplus military equipment built a warehouse in the form of a castle on this island.    This warehouse was in use until the 1950's, had a major fire in the 1960s, and remains a very interesting set of ruins for which an effort is being made to stablize the remaining structures.

There are limited tours being operated by the Bannerman Castle Trust (http://www.bannermancastle.org) and as you can see hardhats are required.

Near the bottom are the ruins of the family's residence, also on the island.
