Were you curious about those subway posters advertising this exhibit at AMNH ? I believe the exhibit just closed. This was an interesting display of mythical creatures and their manifestation in religion and other objects, such as griffins, dragons, mermaids, and unicorns. Some are based on reality such as the Giant Squid. Others are myths about real animals such as the bird and snake.
Chupacabra - and the movie Gremlins
Griffin - half lion, half eagle - and you see this each nite at the end of Jeopardy.
Garuda and Naga - Bird and Snake - appears in Hindu and Asian cultural symbols
Garuda and Naga - even moved its way across the ocean to the Aztecs and eventually on the flag of Mexico.
Unicorn - actually not just a horse with a single horn, but also billy-goat style beard and a tail of a lion. Appears on Kirin Beer.
